Born on 22 June 1949 in Munich; Protestant-Lutheran; married, four children.

A-levels. Studied law, doctorate in law in 1978.
Lawyer and author in Munich.

Honorary friend of the city of Tel Aviv, honorary citizen of the city of Marktredwitz, honorary officer of the Traunstein mountain rifle company, honorary member of the Bavarian Isargau home and traditional costume associations, honorary member of the Munich-Großhadern traditional costume association; awarded the "München leuchtet - den Freunden Münchens" medal in gold in 1986, awarded the Cross of Merit on Ribbon of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany in 1989, awarded the Bavarian Order of Merit in 1991.

Member of the city council of the state capital of Munich from 1972 to 1982, 1982 to 1986 professional city councillor and head of the district administration department of the state capital of Munich; 1990 to 2002 member of the Bavarian State Parliament; October 1986 to October 1990 State Secretary in the Bavarian State Ministry of the Interior, October 1990 to March 1994 Bavarian State Minister for Regional Development and Environmental Affairs.

Member of the Bundestag from 2002 to 2015. On 31 March 2015, Gauweiler resigned from his position as Deputy Chairman of the CSU. He also resigned as a member of the Bundestag due to internal party differences on euro rescue policy.
